Two Points Races at NED, Rain-outs at LVD and NOD

by Neil Van Zile

The weather finally allowed a race weekend that featured racing on both Saturday and Sunday, at least at one dragstrip in the area.

Racing at New England Dragway ended both days with strong showings by the new, younger generation of racers.

On Saturday, the weather did play a role, with high winds and cold temperatures causing the Pro and Super Pro racers to decide on running the 1/8th mile in an effort to keep the drivers of the faster cars safe. Even with that, the cold track surface caused Phil Dembrowsky to take a  couple of scary rides in his roadster in the final rounds; once on a bye run in the quarter-finals, and then again in the semi-final round.  By Sunday the wind had died down enough for full quarter-mile racing.

Lebanon Valley Dragway wasn’t as lucky. Saturday went off fine, but the same cold temps and high winds also kept that track from running the 1/4-mile. Unfortunately, Sunday proved to be a washout, with rains moving into the West Lebanon area before the second time trial was finished.

New Oxford Dragway also suffered a rain-out of their first scheduled points race on Friday, April 30.

So, while New England Dragway has now been able to complete two bracket points events, Lebanon Valley and New Oxford have yet to get their first points races on the books.

All three tracks are scheduled to host a bracket points race next weekend; New Oxford on Friday, New England on Saturday, and Lebanon Valley on Sunday. Also note that New England Dragway will be closed on Sunday in observance of Mother’s Day.

Local Winners at Atlanta’s Final NHRA National Event

Three New England-based racers also showed well at the final NHRA National Event held at Atlanta over the past weekend.

Rhode-Island native Bob Tasca III earned his second consecutive Wally of 2021 in Funny Car, defeating John Force in the final with a run of 4.004 at 326.48 mph versus Force’s losing 4.015 at 321.81 mph. Tasca also had the top speed in Funny Car for the weekend.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Matt Gill of West Bridgewater, MA took home the trophy by defeating Bob McCosh (5.522 at 271.02 versus 5.542 at265.59). Gill also had top speed and low ET in TAFC for the meet.

Connecticut-native Kent Hanley very nearly completed a two-fer by making it to the final round in both Super Stock and Super Comp eliminators. Hanley took his GT/EA 1994 Cavalier to the win in the Super Stock final against Brett Candies FSS/G 2010 Mustang. Unfortunately, Hanley was not the winner in the Super Comp final, losing to Chuck Trotter by a narrow margin – Trotter ran 8.907 with a 0.009 RT to Hanley’s 8.906 on a 0.034 RT.

As always, DragRaceCentral.com did a great job of covering all the racing. You can see their complete coverage here.
