Jr. Dragster Divisional at LVD
"Brutal" August weather and
"Keeping it in the family"
were the stories last weekend
by Neil Van Zile
The Jr. Dragster Divisional race at Lebanon Valley was the big story this past weekend, but there was a lot of great racing all over the New England region. While Jr. Dragster teams from all of the Division 1 NHRA track invaded the Valley of Speed, all the other tracks took advantage of the clear skies to get in some racing from the specialty racing series. While some racers described the weather conditions as “brutal,” everyone worked through it and completed a long list of eliminators.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Winterport Dragway Hosted the Gassah Guys Vaughn Stevens Mid-Season Championship event on Saturday and a weekly bracket program on Sunday.

If there was any doubt as to whether drag racing was a family sport, here’s a list that should put an end to that debate. In the interest of fairness, we are listing these in alphabetical order.
The DeCastro Family made three trips to the New England Dragway Winner’s Circle over the weekend. The husband and wife team run in the Outlaw 10.5 series, and Patty DeCastro took her Mustang to a win in Real Street on Saturday AND Sunday. Not to be outdone, Andy DeCastro pulled off the win in his Ford Fairmont in Fast Street on Sunday.
_________________________
The Genualdo Family continued their winnings ways, and this time brother Kyle got in on the action. Kyle Genualdo won the 13-14 Jr. Gamblers race on Friday at the NHRA/JDRL Jr. Championships at LVD, and his sister Kaylee Genualdo won the main event in the 15-17 class on Saturday. Kyle then went on to runner-up in the Jr. Dragster eliminator during LVD’s Sunday’s bracket events.
_________________________
The Horton Family has been on a tear this season, and Logan Horton continued the trend with a runner-up in the 6-9 age group at the NHRA/JDRL Jr. Championships at LVD on Saturday. Then dad Wayne Horton towed down the hill and won the Iannotti Bros. Select Cars Top Sportsman race on Sunday at New England Dragway in the Lewis Sugg’s Camaro.

The Kirpens Boys pulled off a father and son double win last week. Bill Kirpens, Jr. ran his Dodge Dakota pickup to the Winner’s Circle in Wednesday night’s Sportsman ET class at Lebanon Valley Dragway. Bill Kirpens, Sr. showed that he still has what it takes at 72 years of age when he took his Duster to the win in Pro Eliminator on Sunday at LVD.
_________________________
The McCormick Family were also father and son winners. Son Zachary McCormick was victorious in the 13-14 Gamblers race on Thursday at the NHRA/JDRL Jr. Championships at LVD. Then on Sunday, dad Scott McCormick took his door car to the win over the dragsters in Super Eliminator with his Nova.

_________________________
The Ticcony Family had two runner-up finishes among the family members. Danielle Ticcony made it to the finals on Friday in the 13-14 Gamblers race at the NHRA/JDRL Jr. Championships, and her dad, Matt Ticcony was the runner-up in Pro Eliminator on Sunday during the LVD bracket race.

Outside Of Our Jurisdiction
Ron & Laura SanGiovanni of Wallingford, Connecticut achieved a long-time goal when their XF/BFRMR (Vintage Ford Flathead powered Rear Engine Modified Roadster) became the first flathead powered roadster on gasoline to break the 200 mph mark at Bonneville Speedweek. They went on to set a new XF/BFRMR record with an official two-way speed average of 205.70 mph. There are probably more records in the car since they had it running at more than 207 mph at the recent Loring Timing Association meet in Limestone, Maine in preparation for the run on the salt.
