Please, make it stop

by Neil Van Zile

In an effort to lessen the trauma, we are going to avoid using the “R” word, but there is no way to avoid what the recent dampness has done to the drag racing schedules in New England this month. The weather has been so wet lately that lawns have grown to unheard-of heights, window frames have swollen to the point where they become unusable, and mold is growing on top of mold. That doesn’t mean that there wasn’t any drag racing.

Todd Rochefort took Tin Can to the Winner’s Circle at the Street Outlaws No Prep event

New England Dragway played host to the Street Outlaws No Prep Kings television show/drag race on Friday and Saturday. Of course, the wet weather forced an early end to the race so the final round between Cody Baker and Eric Kvilhaug will be held at another Street Outlaws event later this summer.

Todd Rochefort of Taunton, MA took his turbocharged Chevette named Tin Can to the winner’s circle in the Small Tire class.

Unfortunately, the All-Star Racing Association (ASRA) race that was scheduled for Sunday was postponed to a later date due to inclement weather.

Lebanon Valley Dragway had to cancel their racing on Wednesday night and on Sunday, but they did host the Bikes In The Valley series and the Central Mass Drag Racers (CMDR) on Saturday.

Jamie Sarracco was a big winner at Cecil County

One of the LVD racers also did well at the Jim Harrington Bracket Race at Cecil County Dragway. Jamie Sarracco took one of those really large checks home by winning his class on Sunday.

New Oxford Dragway had a complete event on Friday night.

Winterport Dragway was washed out on Sunday.

The Loring Timing Association held their first land speed racing event of the year in Limestone, ME, and a number of new records were set in various classes. The LTA has some coverage of their event on their Facebook page here. And check out the cool video by Deschaine Digital

The 2021 JEGS NHRA SPORTSnationals were held at National Trail Raceway in Ohio this past weekend. There weren’t too many New Englanders in competition at the event, but two New England-based racers did end up in the final rounds of their respective classes.

Brian Sawyer of Lunenburg, MA was runner-up in the Super Street final against Scott Weisend.

Darren Wood of Barkhamsted CT won a double-breakout final in Super Gas against Jeff Jenson.

Drag Race Central has complete round-by-round coverage of the event online.
