Drag Racing Results for September 22 - 26, 2021

Volume 1 – Issue 27
For the week of September 20 – 26, 2021

by Neil Van Zile

Each week I write this synopsis of the drag racing action in New England and every week it seems more and more like a weather report rather than a racing report. This week was no different.

Drag racing in the Great State of Maine was a complete washout this past weekend. The threat of rain on Saturday and Sunday also kept the car counts down at the New England No Time The Gauntlet race and the Cam Snappers Old Fashioned Sunday event at New England Dragway. Lebanon Valley Dragway benefited from nearly perfect weather and two Cold Cash Days to draw large fields of bracket racers from all over the Northeast.

Sunday at New England Dragway was also the setting for the Arnie Karp Celebration of Life ceremony. Arnie’s family hosted a gathering at the track pavilion next to a beautiful display by the Paul Zona race team featuring “The Boston Strangler” tribute funny car and Blair Smith’s “Boston Challenger.” Plans to have the tribute car make a pass in Arnie’s honor were thwarted by a lack of replacement parts to fix a hurt motor.

New Oxford Dragway and Winterport Dragway were both rained out all weekend.

Lebanon Valley Dragway held its final Wednesday Night points race of the season last week. Saturday and Sunday featured two days of LVD’s Cold Cash Gamblers races. Saturday also saw the completion of the NHRA.TV Challenge race that was originally held on Sept. 8.

It was a contrast of new and old at New England Dragway. Racers and fans who let the weather reports keep them away from the track missed some great racing on both days.

Saturday featured the New England No Time “The Gauntlet No Time Anarchy” race. Promoter Mikel Miranda and his crew pulled off another great event.

Sunday started out rainy, but the crew had the track dry by 11:00 a.m., and the Cam Snappers Club “Old Fashioned Sunday” was able to go off without a hitch.

For the second week in a row, this writer witnessed incidents involving racers being taken away in an ambulance.

At NED, during the morning time trials, an unfortunate incident involving a stuck throttle in the burnout box left two cars damaged and brought out the EMTs and clean-up crew.

Later in the afternoon, prior to a planned memorial run to disperse Arnie Karp’s ashes at the top end of the track, racer Ted Cook got his foot caught under the rear tire of “The Racketeer” dragster while trying to get the car’s transmission unstuck from reverse gear.

The car moved backward suddenly, knocking Cook to the ground and rolling onto his leg. A crowd of crew members quickly got the car lifted off of Cook’s leg and EMTs transported Cook to Portsmouth Hospital in an abundance of caution.

Doctors concluded that Cook’s only injury was a pre-existing tendency to put himself in harm’s way. Cook later posted a photo on Facebook from his hospital bed, indicating with his middle finger that he was Number One.
